Motorcycle recalls have become a common occurrence in the United States, and are typically caused by defects which place the consumer at risk for serious personal injuries and possibly death. According to the United States Code for Motor Vehicle Safety - Title 49, Chapter 301, Section 30101 (a) (8), motor vehicle safety is "the performance of a motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment in a way that protects the public against unreasonable risk of accidents occurring because of the design, construction, or performance of a motor vehicle, and against unreasonable risk of death or injury in an accident, and includes nonoperational safety of a motor vehicle."

In the event that a motorcycle is found to be defective for any reason, it is the responsibility of the vehicle manufacturer to inform the necessary people. For example if a motorcycle is defective the manufacturer must inform the owners, and if motorcycle equipment is faulty or defective the manufacturer is expected to inform vehicle distributors.

There are many factors which may cause a motorcycle to pose a threat to the owner, such as:

  • Tire failure
  • Brake failure
  • Faulty toeclips
  • Chain defects
  • Defective shock absorbers
  • Rear wheel lock up
